The touchscreen has been especially helpful, allowing them to tap, drag, draw, and interact with lessons in ways that feel natural for their age and background with current technology. This technology supports their language development through visuals, auditory cues, and interactive math and literacy activities that meet my students at their level.\r\nMy kids are absolutely thrilled with this laptop! Since most of my students were born in 2020, many of them are familiar with using technology at home on cellphones. So, the touch screen aspect is familiar and much easier for them to navigate than the traditional, much older/slower student laptops they have access to at school through the district. Most of my students come from families facing financial and resource challenges, and do not have access to technology outside of cell phones, so this device has become a powerful learning tool. For many of them, this is the first time they've been able to use technology designed for education rather than just entertainment, like Youtube or video games.\r\nThe Yoga's (literal) flexibility of being able to be bent into a tablet mode, makes it perfect for their small hands for whole group practice at the carpet or in small groups. Students are most excited about using drawing tools and websites to practice letter formation, listening to stories that strengthen early reading skills on EPIC! (district provided website for books) and exploring math games that provide problem solving opportunities through games/play on Freckle (another district site). Their excitement has created a ripple effect in our classroom! Even students who were hesitant learners/participants at first, are excited to participate in small groups, and are eager to raise their hands to use the technology (often times before I even ask a question or give a direction haha). This is a huge bonus for me as a teacher, since small groups are where I can provide specific interventions and enrichment opportunities to students on a regular basis, outside of whole group.\r\nSeveral students have utilized the new technology in meaningful ways. One English language learner who often struggled to communicate now uses the touchscreen to illustrate her ideas and practice her vocabulary. It also allows me to communicate any misunderstandings we have due to language barriers! I am hoping this continues to support her academic growth, as being in a school where you don't speak the same language can be scary and overwhelming. Another student who has difficulty with fine-motor tasks has found success using the touch features, allowing him to participate more independently in literacy and counting activities. \r\nYour generosity has not only given our class a vital resource but has opened doors for many students who deserve every opportunity to grow, explore, and feel successful. This is vital in creating a foundational relationship to school with these students, so they have a love of school and continue to grow and learn as students.
