Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Dugan Alternative High School and Second Chance Alternative High Schools are Chicago Public Schools for students between the ages of 16-21 who have previously dropped out of high school, but returned to complete their high school educations. We are sister-schools that serve neighbhorhoods on opposite sides of south-side gang boundaries.
We are successful because we provide resources and services to our students that help remove the major obstacles that often prevent graduation. Family therapy, childcare for teen parents, literature groups for teen girls, art therapy groups, life skills, and parenting classes are just a few of our services.
In order to provide our students with all the tools they will need to lead happy, healthy, and successful lives after high school we would like to invite HealthWorks Theatre to our schools to perform "Break It Down". In HealthWorks's own words, they "developed this play to reach out to today's youth. Through a collage of scenes and monologues, Break It Down urges teens to talk, listen, and think about important life choices. The play works to gain teenagers' trust and challenges students' perceptions while sending a serious preventive message about HIV/AIDS, gang violence, teen pregnancy, and substance abuse."
HealthWorks has already donated a free session to one site, but the other site has not benefited from this outstanding presentation. We are seeking funds to bring HealthWorks to our other school site.
HealthWorks Theatre's HIV/AIDS performance entitled "Break It Down" includes pre and post-tests and a facilitated discussion after the performance.
