My Students
I have the awesome job of teaching physical education to 700 students from 1st through 5th grade. We are a Chinese Immersion school where 10 classes of students in all grades spend half their day learning math and science in Mandarin. What an amazing opportunity! We also Focus on Safety, show Respect, show Enthusiasm, show Acceptance, and show Responsibility. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, 1/3 from low-income homes. We are a Title I school focused on achievement both in and out of the classroom.
As a staff, we do everything we can to reach each and every student where they are socially, academically, physically and emotionally and help them grow.
Due to Covid-19 guidelines, we are doing PE in the classroom. Kids, now more than ever need to get up and move to keep their bodies healthy and strong. PE is an amazing opportunity to learn social skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and conflict resolution, as well as acceptance and kindness. I'm looking for safe and creative ways to help my students grow and thrive under unprecedented circumstances.
My Project
During PE this year, students are remaining in their classrooms, to avoid movement throughout the building as we all attempt to do our part to stop the spread of the virus.
It's difficult to find activities that are fun and engaging, but these foam deck rings will provide a multitude of lessons for my students.
Each student will be able to have their own ring (to avoid the spread) and can toss it onto a target such as a cone, toss and catch it, toss it and catch it on their arm, toss a beanbag into it, kick it with their feet, dribble it with their feet, pass it back and forth with a partner, toss it onto a partner's foot, roll it between a partner's legs or cones, or use it as a tool for fitness where they can jump or hop over or around it. The possibilities are endless!
After each class uses the deck rings, they can be easily sanitized for use the next day by other students
There are so many possibilities for fun activities that help teach the PE standards for DE, get my students up and moving and engage them in something fun and unique, all while staying safe in the classroom setting during a pandemic.
