This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Reading novels in history class? Isn't that supposed to be English? Ugh, this is so boring, why does any of this matter? History teachers face a huge dilemma: math teaches them how the quantitative world works, science teaches them how the observable world works, and English teaches them how human communication works. So where does that leave history? It's so important, truly, because it teaches students how human minds work! What decisions have been made and why? How did those decisions effect humanity? We deal with such interesting topics, but students often do not understand that. They think history classes are just for memorizing facts. History education must meet students where they are and help them understand why the subject matters for their future. These texts will help students make those connections!
Students will be so much more engaged in critical thinking with historical concepts when they're able to digest (actually interesting) nonfiction texts as part of weekly lit circles.
With a class set of interesting nonfiction texts, student choice and collaboration will lead to stronger mental processing and connection of ideas from then to now! I want every student who leaves my class to know that learning history actually helps you better understand humanity. By helping me to purchase these books, you are contributing to changing up the boring wrote memorization technique of history classes past. Students will be able to choose from a variety of texts to engage in weekly literature circles and make connections to their own futures. It's really powerful stuff!
