My Project
My students are special because they are inquisitive and eager to learn, despite the challenges they faced through the COVID-19 pandemic. Our classroom is a safe and comfortable learning environment where students are free to take risks and fail, as they know mistakes are a part of learning.
My goal for this grant is for learning to come to life through reading texts on Native American history, the historical fiction novel "Blood on the River," and other mentor texts to model English Language Arts and Social Studies skills in an authentic way that promotes inclusivity.
Because I am a Native American from the Choctaw nation, teaching history and honoring Native Americans as well as other cultures are important to me. In this grant, I have also included modeling clay and beads to be used for Native American Heritage Month as we integrate art by learning about Native American beading and clay pot making.
I have also included STEM activities we will use in our classroom for Soft Starts. When students first come into school they have 20 minutes before instructional time begins. During this time students will use the STEM supplies to create until we start class. I've found when I incorporate soft starts into our routine students are excited to come to class on time, and it encourages them to work cooperatively as a team building social skills. Having time to develop these social skills is needed due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lastly, I have included a professional development book over the Social Studies Eduprotocols. The Eduprotocols help teachers teach the material efficiently and effectively saving teachers time In the process. Students are actively engaged using the four C's- critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration which will help prepare them for 21st-century skills.
