I teach US History and Economics at a large public urban high school. Our school is diverse with students from many different cultural backgrounds. One thing that nearly all of my students share is their tremendous creativity. They often wish to express themselves and demonstrate their learning through art projects. Images transcend cultural and linguistic boundaries, and for visual learners they are essential elements for bringing abstract concepts to life. My students have created manga comics detailing life during the depression, posters demonstrating the pros and cons of the free market system, political cartoons that reflect complex and ironic points of view, as well as a variety of other art projects. Unfortunately, I am severely limited in my access to art supplies. Our school budget is currently being cut due to a large deficit at the state level. Non-essential items such as art supplies are not currently being funded. I am still using a class set of markers and pencils that are over five years old, worn out, and almost unusable. With your contribution to my project, you will help inspire my students to continue to create masterpieces, and bring history and economics to life!
