History, HERStory, Make it Their Story! (Part II)

My students need biographies of inspirational men and women (such as Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama) to add to our classroom library.

My Students

I teach third grade at a diverse, Title I school in southwest Florida. Sixty-one percent of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. Our students come from numerous cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Through lots of hard work, our school continues to help our students succeed.

I encourage lots of independent reading time in my classroom, and I expect my students to read from a range of genres.

The biography and history sections of our classroom library need a major makeover! I want to provide my students with more diverse historical events and people to read about!

My Project

For this project, I am requesting several books to add to our classroom library. Many of these books, such as the books in the American Girl "Real Stories From My Time" series, are chock full of information about history, a topic my students LOVE to read about! I have also requested many, many biographies about inspirational men and women (both historical and current). My students love to read biographies and I need a greater variety of this genre to keep their interest! It is my hope to build up enough biographies about inspirational women and African Americans to create separate tubs in my library for these topics.

Readers of all ages can find much to consider, relate to, and celebrate when they read stories of people or events who’ve had an impact on our lives and culture.

I hope that having access to these books provides my students with the ability to learn more about people different than themselves. In doing so, they will become more tolerant and accepting of others. Thank you for helping me provide this inspiration for my students!
