Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a history teacher at Richards Career Academy in Chicago where over 88% of my students receive free lunch. My goal is to have my students become historians. During the course of the school year, my students are to select a history fair topic to research and present to the class and school. Students can select any topic that interests them within history. Their topic can focus on a person, place or event. The purpose of this project is to have my students learn how to research and analyze various sources. Students are engaged in learning because they research topics that are of interest to them. Students are also progressing because this project requires them to read and write about their topic. Students are required to present their research on an exhibit board. The exhibit board must have visuals as well as a five-seven paragraph expository essay explaining what students have learned about their topics. The boards will be displayed within the school. Students will also be required to present their boards to the class as a presentation. This assignment has been greatly appreciated by my students. However, the problem I have in motivating my students is not the actual research but the cost of the boards and the materials. Many of my students cannot afford the cost of the exhibit boards. Exhibit boards range from $4.00 -$6.00 dollars each. Students are allowed to work in pairs. Therefore, I am requesting 80 exhibit boards for my history classes.
