Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My goal is for my students to become wild readers! I want them to fully immerse themselves in a great book.

I have a wonderful group of energetic and humorous 5th grade students who are eager to learn about the world around them.

Our K-5 school has approximately 850 students. The vision of our school district states: Our aim is to provide students with the knowledge of those academic skills and concepts which they must learn and apply to function effectively in our society. We endeavor to motivate, inspire, and encourage all students to use their unique potentials to reach their highest level of academic achievement and emotional and physical well-being.

My Project

This project will allow every student in my classroom to have their own copy of a great historical fiction novel titled, Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. Chains takes place during the American Revolution and is centered around a Isabel who is a slave trying to do whatever she can to free herself and her sister. We have a balanced literacy program at my school and this novel will be used during our shared read. This novel will be used during language arts and social studies. For this unit we have a theme of Conflict. The main character, Isabel deals with inner and outer conflict throughout the novel. My students will use many different comprehension strategies and skills while reading this book.

This donation will allow my students to really dive deep into a great book.

By having their own copies it will allow them the ability to find evidence in the text in order to hold classroom discussions and think critically about the American Revolution from a different perspective. These books would make a tremendous impact on my student's reading development
