I teach second grade in a public elementary school in a small town. There are 16 students in my class currently, but a class size can reach up to 22 students. Almost all of my students have attended school together since Pre-K. There is a strong sense of community in my classroom because of this. I have taught in this school system for 20 years, so I know a lot of their family members and feel we have a strong connection which benefits the students' learning experience in my classroom.
My students are excited to learn.
They love to read and are becoming stronger readers each day. They like hands-on materials and are hard-working and eager to have new experiences.
I want to use the materials purchased to help the students develop their reading, writing, research, and critical thinking skills as they will gain a deeper understanding of history and society and share the new knowledge they learn.
The items purchased for my classroom will enable my students to compare his own community with others, specifically with an appreciation for valuing differences and multiculturalism.
To learn more about government, its roles and how officials are chosen. How to work together successfully on projects to reach a goal. Last, but not least how to become a strong reader and a good productive citizen in our community.
I am going to use the field trip to Discovery Park to bring history to life for the students. By using their five senses it will bring history to realization for them. The trade books Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, and so forth will allow the students to hear nonfiction stories about The Civil War and give them a better understanding of their heritage and where they came from and why things are the way they are today. The blocks will allow the students to problem solve and be creative when designing things the way they were years ago compared to present day.
