History and Portraiture, How Artists Capture Our Past & Present

My Students
My school serves a rural population, with 52% or more qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Budgets are small, but our dreams are big! Our school is one of very few in the state to offer a year-long visual arts program in grades 6-8, rather than the typical 9 week course.
My students are driven to learn about our community, as well as the world outside of our charming little town.
My art class provides a hands-on approach to learn through actual production and experimentation. We learn about geometry through perspective drawing. We learn about history and ancient civilizations through our art history lessons. We improve literacy and language skills through verbal and written art/artist critiques.
My Project
I will ask my students, "What part does the portrait play in our history?" I can't wait to delve into the tradition of portraiture from the Renaissance, to Presidential portraits, to our modern family portraits. We will learn about contour drawings, gesture drawings, and facial proportions.
The supplies from this project will allow us to mimic the look of oil paint, but in a more age appropriate way.
The solvents and chemicals required to use oil, not to mention the cost, makes it an unsuitable choice for my middle school classroom. High quality oil pastels will allow us to get a similar saturated look, while exploring blending techniques to allow the students to show their personal style of art making. Will they work in a loose and expressive way, like Van Gogh? Will they work in a more realistic and mathematical way, like Raphael? Will they work with symbolism and color, like Kehinde Wiley? I can't wait to see where this project, and these generous supplies, will take us!
