This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning becomes contagious once the materials you need are presented. In this case, the students are at a loss for resources to engage in research.

I teach in a Title 1 school in a highly poverty stricken area of NY.

The students I work with have many barriers that impede their success in school. The school is comprised of primarily African American and Hispanic students. Since the majority of the families in the neighborhood are second generation immigrants, they still face many social frustrations and this prevents students from being fully focused in school.

My Project

In order to help students learn about the country in which they now live, we cover a westward expansion unit during social studies and tie it in with the literacy units. The students are engaged in daily research, collaborative discussions to share their findings, and independent reading to digest the information covered in the unit. They love researching, but are at a loss when there are not enough materials to go around. They greatly need the books to conduct their research.

Be the person to knock down one of the barriers that my students face.

Place the materials they need into the hands of the students who will relish the opportunity to find out more about the history of the country in which they live. Be the person to help in expanding their minds.
