Historical Graphic Novels for Gifted Readers

Help me give my students a variety of nonfiction graphic novels to engage them as readers and challenge them as consumers of text and information.

My Project

My students are gifted readers; however, they don't often choose to read novels on their own. When they do read novels, they often choose graphic novels that they breeze through quickly, often without reading all of the text. There are so many complex elements in graphic novels that students have not explicitly learned!

Through this project, students will choose a historical graphic novel to read and analyze as we learn about the many complex choices that a graphic novel author and illustrator makes.

Students will be able to choose which time period in history they want to explore, starting with one of these graphic novels - Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales, an I Survived graphic novel, or the Newberry Honor Book Bomb turned into a graphic novel. We will define and identify different elements of the graphic novel genre, including panels, gutters, and bleeds, through a scavenger hunt. We will discuss the reasons behind an author's choice in layout, size, and colors on a page. Through reading the graphic novels, students will also begin research on their chosen time period in history, first engaging with history in a familiar and engaging format.
