My students have been through a Covid 19 pandemic, they live in an economically depressed area and are often told that the world is against people of color who look like them. I often see students who have a hard time imagining how to succeed despite the odds. I worry about their mental health and their ability to continue to progress when the future looks bleak. I think one way to show them that they are capable is for them to learn how other people who have succeeded against the odds. I think it will help give them a vision to shape own futures.
I want the students to create a clay bust of a historical figure.
I hope my students will be inspired by others who have overcome obstacles. They will do research, create a sculpture and a factual poster to display with the likeness of their historical figure. This project will help them with their non-fiction writing abilities and their artistic/creative abilities. More importantly, I think it will provide them hope and a vision for their future.
