Crochet is one of those skills that seems difficult to master at first but, once students have mastered it, they gain confidence in their abilities to do hard things. I use crochet to teach them pattern reading, diagram reading, and patience. I also think it is a great way for those students who have a hard time sitting still in school to practice an activity that keeps them busy. It works to relax my students almost like a mindfulness lesson. It gives students a chance to use a different part of their brain which refreshes them and gets them ready to return to academic study. My students love crochet because it allows them to connect with each other. While they are working, they talk and learn social skills. Many of my students have said it is their favorite project that we do. I often notice a change in the climate of my class after we do a crochet lesson.
