Historical Fiction Depicting Stalin's Soviet Union Gulags during WWII

My Students

My sophomore students are most successful when absorbed in stories that are real-world relevant. Sophomore literature is focused on World Literature. My students are interested in what is going on around them. With Sophomores, everything I teach has to correlate to their lives. If I can't tell them why something is relevant, then they think it is a waste of time. Sophomore year is an important year developmentally because students develop their unique personalities and opinions. They are figuring out who they are, and trying to gain more independence and responsibility. They are starting to figure out how the world works. They are interested, but hesitant or cautious about everything. Most teachers use the book "Animal Farm" to teach themes about Soviet Russia, Dictatorship, and Communism. I want to focus more on how dictatorships affect the general population by using a historical fiction text.

My Project

"Ashes in the Snow" is about a young teenager named Lina who, with her mother and younger brother, is deported to a Soviet gulag amid Stalin's occupation of the Baltic region during World War II. She is an aspiring artist. She secretly documents her harrowing journey with her drawings, while trying to send messages to her family members using her art.

Our class will create origami based on symbols within the text.

The supplemental history texts will provide an introduction to Stalin, Gulog Camps, and an introduction of communism, prior to the literature lesson.
