My Students

My school meets the educational needs of at-risk students ages 17-21. We are located in the heart of the city, making us easily accessible via the Milwaukee County Transit System. Our educational program is designed to meet students’ needs using a “Holistic Education” approach. Student programs are primarily half-day with opportunities for extended days for qualifying students. The curriculum includes computer-based instruction utilizing Edgenuity, small traditional classroom settings, competency-based learning programs and GED02. We offer special education support and resources.

The school offers a strong support program to students as they transition from high school to secondary education, the world of work or the military.

Our program is enhanced by the support of a full-time social worker, learning coordinator, parent coordinator, school counselor, a part-time transition coordinator and a half time school psychologist. At our school, the administrators, teachers, staff and students firmly believe that we are a place “Where Everybody Is Somebody.”

My Project

The use of hip-hop lyric writing, analysis, and discussion is an effective medium through which youth can disclose and process emotional experiences. Within the field of school counseling, Hip-Hop and Spoken Word Therapy (HHSWT) has emerged as an efficacious and malleable school counseling framework.

HHSWT is a counseling process where youth write, record, and perform emotionally-themed songs about emotional difficulties in their lives.

HHSWT tasks youth with emotional lyric writing to explore difficult feelings and recording to hear themselves Counselors using HHSWT analyze students’ lyrics to identify thought patterns and assist students with rewriting lyrics to reflect their feelings.
