Hinson's Heroes Super Calming Corner

Help me give my students soft furnishings and soothing materials for our superhero classroom calming corner to help my superheroes use and improve their self-regulation skills.

My Students

The superheroes in my class are an amazing group of diverse learners who learn best in the small class setting. My class includes a combination of kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students. While each student in my care has individual academic, social, and/or emotional needs, many of my students demonstrate significant behavioral difficulties that impact learning and require behavioral intervention including, but not limited to, a calming corner within the classroom setting.

I have found when my students feel great frustration, anger, sadness, or anxiety, they become confused and may be unsure how to control their emotions. By providing them with a quiet place to calm themselves, they are then able to regain control over their own emotions. This also provides opportunities for defusing a negative emotion or situation before it escalates. Implementing a calming corner in my classroom has been a positive addition to my instructional program.

My Project

Full funding of this project would allow me to improve my current "Superhero Calming Corner" to be equipped with soft furnishings and soothing materials to help my students de-escalate when upset. The materials I am requesting in this project will help provide a safer place for my students to use and improve their self-regulation skills during the school day. Students have the ability to use the calm corner when they are angry, frustrated, or feel some level of emotional distress that they may or may not be able to verbalize.

A critical component of social and emotional learning is self-regulation.

Research suggests that students with healthy emotional and positive behavior are able to better navigate their learning spaces and their world. Those who are taught self-regulation skills also learn better at school.
