This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I believe that the best way for students to learn science is to DO science. Through active inquiry, students not only apply the content and skills that they learn in the classroom but also learn the process skills and scientific attitudes necessary for being a scientist.

My students live in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the United States and come from all over the world.

Many are immigrants or refugees, and most speak English as 2nd or 3rd language. Most of these students are the first in their families to attend college, and many will be the first in their families to graduate from high school. I primarily teach the Honors Chemistry sections, which includes highly motivated and talented students with possible futures in science. Through education, these students are poised to raise their families out of poverty and to live the American dream, and I am proud to help them in this pursuit.

My Project

The purpose of this electronic balance is for students to use during active scientific inquiry. Last year, I completed a project through Donors Choose and secured one Scout Pro Electronic Balance. This is a professional grade balance that accurately measures centigrams (.01), which is necessary for many of the precise labs and experiments students conduct in Chemistry. It is also rugged and very education-friendly, making it the perfect balance for a classroom. My students were very happy with the equipment and have put the first balance to good use, but one balance for 35 students is not enough! A second balance will halve the amount of time students need to wait in order to use the equipment and allow them to spend more time engaged in analyzing their data and forming conclusions.

Student-centered, inquiry based learning requires sufficient classroom materials for all students to have access.

By helping me obtain a 2nd electronic balance for my class, you will be halving the amount of time students have to wait for supplies and allowing them to spend twice as much time engaged in learning. As a result, my students will have the opportunity to design, conduct, and analyze data from experiments, modeling the scientific process and learning valuable problem solving skills.
