My Students

Each year that I teach high school English, I am happily blown away by the diverse and vast interest my students have when it comes to reading. I teach students from all different walks of life, and all who have a different story to tell. As their teacher, I celebrate their interests, and I make it a goal to have at least one book within my classroom that can reach them.

It has been hard teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially when it comes to reading.

Many times, because of students testing positive, quarantine, etc, it has been physically impossible to get my students to class, and therefore, I have seen their reading skills dip. I am participating in this Donors Choose project to request resources to support my students' well-being, as well as address the impacts of their interrupted education and learning from the past two years due to COVID-19.

My Project

During the pandemic, one of the hardest skills that has been difficult to teach and promote has been reading. Usually, when students are present in class I am able to promote and highlight many different high-interest books for students, and typically they are checked out that same day. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, students' desire to read has gone down, mainly because they are not in an environment where they are surrounded by books, nor supported in a way to help develop their reading skills.

The books that I have requested for this project will specifically help my high-schoolers find joy and excitement in reading again.

Despite my students going through another round testing positive and needing to quarantine, I am doing my best at creating digital content that highlights and promotes high-interest books for students to check out when they return back to school. The majority of the books that I requested in this project were student selected as books they want to read, and I hope that in creating this project I can help address their emotional needs and mental well-being by providing them with good literature that drives them to want more. I believe that if I have good, high-interest books for my students to read, I can help bridge the reading learning gap that many of them are facing because of the pandemic.
