Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school, sits on the edge of Richmond, California. It has a student population that largely consists of children of color and almost one-third of the students are English Language Learners. All of my students come from diverse countries, families, and socio-economic standings that lead to a rich cultural environment. However, due to the high poverty rate in my county, many students are not afforded the hands-on, culturally relevant, extracurricular education that they deserve.

My goal is to create a curriculum that is hands-on, student-centered, and relevant to their lives.

I personally teach the upper levels of ELD which means my students are in my class for two periods a day. The longer class time allows more time to get into projects, create some art and have longer discussions about the real world.

My Project

As noted before, I strive to create an environment for my students that encourages diversity and cultural appreciation. However, many mainstream books for school children focus on the lives of Caucasian students with different obstacles. These books will allow more access, and hopefully more interest, to books that have characters who reflect them. Books like Esperanza Rising and The Afterlife by Gary Soto focus on the issues that affect Latina/o students personally. In addition, these stories are at a reading lexical level for my middle school students that will push their comprehension skills but also are not too difficult that they will give up.

These stories not only validate the culture and environment they live in, but validate them personally.

On the news we see so much negativity towards immigrant families and people of color. This is a way for students to see another side of the story, a side that gives them pride to be a Latina/o.

All students deserve to feel pride about who they are and where they come from. This is why I am asking for donations to my project.
