My Students

We are a school on the far northeast side of Chicago where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Due to the lack of funding, I am not able to buy any new books for my 6th grade Language Arts classroom. We are trying to improve test scores and prepare for the new Common Core assessments, but we do not have the resources we need. Our students are wonderful and work extremely hard. They often comment on our lack of quality reading materials, and it is easy to see their disappointment. As I add more high interest books to our library, I'm finding my high level readers are complaining they don't have anything to read

Our classroom library needs more age appropriate high level books.

Imagine being in 6th grade and having a high reading level, but all books at a high reading level aren't appropriate for you to read! We need more choice of high interest high level books in our classroom library. Students are expected to read at school and at home, but there is never enough books in our library!

My Project

After taking the Winter NWEA standardized tests, I saw a huge jump in my students scores. While this is great news, it also means that I need to give them more high level reading books. Some of my students are reading between 1500 to 1800L. The highest lexile level is 1900! I need more books at those high levels that are not only interesting, but appropriate for middle school students. I have done a ton of research on high level student appropriate books. I have been fortunate enough to get many new books this school year, but my highest readers have already read them all or the books are too low for them. It's time to add more books to our library!
