My students need 2 portable CD/DVD players to listen to stories on CD or view read along stories on DVD during work stations, as well as more small group books on CD.
I remember always loving a good book on tape, how about you? Well, my students are from the 21st century, so we need to update our "books on tape" collection into the new and improved CD/DVD format! Their love of technology will add engaged learning into their small group reading time.
My students are ages 6-8 years old and are excited about first grade!
They are creative, open minded, and energetic students. They strive every day to do their best in every subject. My classroom is self-contained where students are taught math, reading, science, and social studies. Our school is in one of the largest district in OK. Our school has a multi-ethnic population with over 45% free or reduced lunch. We are part of a network of schools that teach using methods that integrate the arts into the classroom as well. We have grades PreK-to-Fifth in our building, and we strive to give our students every opportunity from art in the classrooms, to class time in the computer lab, to expanding their vocabulary during reading block. My students love receiving new resources for our classroom from DonorsChoose.
My Project
I am requesting 2 new portable CD/DVD players for my classroom. We will use them during small-group work stations and for independent learning during school hours and during after-school tutoring. Each player allows me to use books on CD or read along DVDs with a small group of 2 students or individual students that need help with language and vocabulary building. Students also benefit from activities like this because they can hear a fluent reader as they look at the words in the book or on the screen. This helps them to mimic or pick up this same fluency when reading books themselves. The set of CD books will increase our classroom collection of books on tape, CD, and DVD; they are appropriately leveled for the beginning readers of first grade, and most of the books in the sets are already included in our classroom curriculum.
This project is important to me because I strive daily to make emerging readers into independent, fluent readers.
These resources will help greatly in this task as well as give another option to my small-group work stations. The students will also be using the skills they acquire to use different kinds of technology in the classroom.
