High tech + Low tech = Creativity and Collaboration

My students need an iPad mini to allow for more technology driven activities and dry erase boards to increase the creative collaborative space in my classroom.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Cresswell's classroom raised $655

My Students

I want my students to come into my classroom and instantly know that our focus in my class is on collaboration, creativity, and, above all, learning.

Remember how exciting math class used to be for you?

How you saw connections to the real world and grew as a thinker? My guess is you answered "no" to the above questions, but we try to make the answer to those questions "yes" every single day in my classroom! My math students are attempting to become 21st century problem solvers. In my differentiated math classroom students are often working on different problems/projects at different times and easily accessible technology (both low tech and high tech) is imperative to smooth workflow and learning. I teach upper level math in Michigan at a large public school. Some of my students are motivated by mathematics while others are not. Many of them see math as a means to an end, and, on bad days, a terribly boring and pointless experience. But, they are curious. They are interested in helping their community. They want to see mathematics in the real world. They want it to be relevant. I'm trying to meet these needs each day in class!

My Project

My project is one part low tech and one part high tech. On the low tech side I have four black whiteboards that require the use of neon markers. In my research into successful classroom design adding collaborative space was frequently suggested. These whiteboards not only add collaborative space but are also more engaging than traditional whiteboards. The high tech part of my project is the iPad mini 2. Through other Donors Choose grants I've received some Chromebooks that get used daily. The iPad provides much of the basic computing that Chromebooks do, but the advantage to the iPad is that it is more dynamic in it's capabilities. Not only can students write blog posts, watch videos, and use software like Geogerba and Desmos, they can also create videos showing their conceptual understanding of topics, do mathematics over images, and create "mathcasts". Also, like any device, it provides another tool that students without smartphones or tablets can use in class.

Each one of my projects aims to add tools (both high tech and low tech) to my classroom that improve the learning process for my students.

My prior projects have done this and I think this project will do the same. Both of these tools will make collaboration and creation, two of the most important 21st century skills, happen more frequently in my classroom.
