High Tech Choral Classroom

My students need technology (iPad) based music instruction to increase student engagement, differentiated instruction, and instructional strategies promoting participation.

My Students

A typical day in the choral classroom consist of traditional warm-ups, sight-reading, and being able to transfer choral/music concepts to rehearsed and pop songs. At the end of the year, I would like for my students recognize their growth. My biggest challenge is instruction through technology.

The students are very tech savvy and are very open-minded in learning foreign music.

Piano lessons, guitar lessons, and voice lessons are very important to students, but it is a challenge to provide all of these activities for the students with the lack of resources. In addition to lessons, technology based music instruction is also important to the students (composing). The students enrolled are in need of being able to cultivate their own ability in performing. Students who are heavily influenced by fine arts are making a difference in the school. They have petitioned to receive dance and theater classes at the school. Students of the choral program have also revealed to the principal that fine arts in the school are not appreciated. The school is a Title I school in the city's public school system. The school is the oldest African American high school and has a proud and supportive alumni who continue to assist with keeping up the school's integrity and tradition.

My Project

The materials requested will increase the use of technology in the choral classroom. With these materials, the classroom will be able to transform into a more functional student-centered choral classroom. Students will be able to evaluate their performance through the software, make adjustments, and gain insight on singing concepts. In addition to the software, students will be able to use apps on the iPad such as Sonja to understand concepts including tonality and resonance.

This project will not only improve instructional strategies, but also promote student engagement and independence while facilitating instruction.

Students of all learning types will be able to understand, engage, and gain an interest in music and chorus. This will provide positive learning experiences as well as a cultural experiences.
