High Schoolers Need To Read These! Awesome Classroom Library

Help me give my students a wide range of books to spark their love of reading! One of these books might be the first book through which they see themselves or the important perspective of someone else!

My Project

Our students go to a high-poverty high school where it's often difficult to find engaging, high-quality books—especially those that reflect who they are, what they care about, and the lives they lead. Many have never encountered characters or stories that feel familiar, and because of that, they haven’t yet experienced the joy and empowerment that comes from seeing themselves in what they read. We're working to change that and reignite the love of reading in this generation of high schoolers.

This project is part of our school's effort to launch classroom libraries that center student choice, increase reading volume, and build the stamina and complexity our readers need.

Based on research and practices from Penny Kittle's Book Love, we know that students grow as readers when they have daily opportunities to choose books that speak to them—books that make them want to turn the page.

The books in this project—Round House, Born A Crime, Maus, Everything, Everything, Scythe, The Great Gatsby, The Rap Year Book, and many more—represent a wide range of genres, authors, and characters. These books serve as both reflections of our students' own lives and glimpses into experiences different from theirs. By offering engaging, culturally meaningful titles that meet students where they are, we can spark a love of reading and help them build the endurance needed to tackle more challenging texts over time.

These books won’t just sit on shelves—they’ll be read, discussed, and remembered. They’ll ignite classroom conversations, fill reading logs, and build confidence. Your support makes it possible for students to enter classrooms where reading is valued, choice is real, and every child can find a book that resonates with them. We believe this is more than just a way to improve test scores—it’s how we grow stronger, more thoughtful, and empowered readers.
