Students cheered when they saw the boxes filled with fresh markers, bright colored pencils, and crisp chart paper. The immediate reaction was one of pure excitement, but more importantly, they felt respected and prepared, knowing they had the high-quality tools to succeed. We immediately put the chart paper and colorful supplies to work on a challenging unit focused on visual problem-solving in mathematics. Instead of just solving problems individually, students collaborated in small groups, using the materials to visually map out complex strategies. For instance, just this week, one group used different colored markers and the large chart paper to represent and prove a geometric theorem, turning an abstract concept into a clear, shared diagram that everyone in the class could understand and learn from.\r\n\r\nThese resources, from the essential pencils, sharpener, and scissors that keep every student prepared, to the whiteboard markers, erasers, and glue sticks that facilitate clear modeling and creative construction, have fundamentally transformed our learning environment. Having the right tools at their fingertips allows students to bypass logistical hurdles and focus purely on conceptual engagement and teamwork. Looking ahead, the next step in our current math project is to transition from these hands-on visual models to more formal, abstract representations. We will use the collaborative charts we created as anchor models to help students bridge the gap, allowing them to translate the vibrant solutions they created with the markers and paper into symbolic equations. Thank you so much for providing the resources my students needed to engage, collaborate, and truly visualize their success!","fullyFundedDate":1754060248229,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-basic-supplies/9480094/","projectTitle":"Classroom Basic Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hilkey","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8915598_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725248638919","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8915598"},{"teacherId":8915598,"projectId":9277668,"letterContent":"The support we received for this project has made an immediate and undeniable difference in my math classroom. Just one month into the new school year, the system of binders, tabs, and designated classroom storage has already transformed how my students approach the curriculum. Before the project, I spent valuable class time helping students find lost papers, and students often felt overwhelmed and disorganized. Now, every single student has a clear, structured system for their notes and handouts. This stability has led to a significant and noticeable increase in engagement: students are more prepared for lessons, their homework completion rate is higher, and the focused look on their faces tells me they feel competent and in control of their learning materials. This simple organizational structure is empowering them to access and review information efficiently, putting them on a faster track to mastery.\r\n\r\nYour generosity did more than just provide supplies; it funded a cultural shift toward academic ownership and efficiency. The storage solution—the compact shelving—has been particularly effective, ensuring the binders are always available in class. This means we hit the ground running every day without the distraction of students needing to pack or unpack essential materials. The result? We are spending less time on logistics and more time on core math instruction. The high levels of organization we've seen in this first month prove that providing these basic tools—and teaching students how to use them—is the foundation for academic success. Thank you for making a lasting investment that is already teaching my students essential study skills they will carry with them throughout their academic careers.","fullyFundedDate":1746786221169,"projectUrl":"project/binders-and-organization-for-math-curric/9277668/","projectTitle":"Binders and Organization for Math Curriculum","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hilkey","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8915598_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725248638919","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8915598"},{"teacherId":9726193,"projectId":8733758,"letterContent":"My school is a title 1 school which has over a 50% free and reduced student population. The food that was received because of the Donors Choose donations helped provide food and snacks for my students who would either go without the necessary nutrition. In some cases, this would be the only thing they ate. The fidget toys were also a benefit for my students who need that stimulation. \r\n\r\nMy students were excited at the materials we received. Knowing they had a safe place to come and grab something to eat was helpful to them. The calculators and pencils were helpful throughout the year and allowed students to perform required class activities. \r\n\r\nThis made my and my student's year much easier and more enjoyable. Your support has truly made a difference in my classroom—not just in how I teach, but in how my students experience school every day.\r\n\r\nWith your help, I was able to purchase a filing cabinet to better organize my lessons, IEPs, and paperwork, which has allowed me to spend more time focused on instruction and supporting my students. Even more importantly, your donation provided classroom supplies and snacks for students who face economic hardship, removing daily barriers that can stand in the way of their education.\r\n\r\nOne example that stands out is a student who thrives on positive reinforcement. With your support, I was able to provide their preferred snack as part of a reward system. Because of this, they've had many more successful days in class—something that seemed much harder before this simple but powerful support was in place.\r\n\r\nWe've been reading Freedom Writers together, and my students have been reflecting on how one caring adult can change lives. Your donation has become a real-life example of that lesson. From providing a snack to a student who hasn't had a chance to eat, to ensuring another has a notebook when their family can't afford one—your generosity has created ripples of impact.\r\n\r\nThank you for being that one person who made a difference.","fullyFundedDate":1734042358587,"projectUrl":"project/full-tummies-support-brain-development/8795807/","projectTitle":"Full Tummies Support Brain Development!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Teala","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7643514_orig.jpg?crop=593,593,x0,y251&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1726676150818","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7643514"},{"teacherId":9726196,"projectId":8733767,"letterContent":"I want to extend my deepest thanks to everyone who contributed to my \"Mental Health in the Math Classroom\" project. Your generous donations have made a lasting impact on my students, and I am truly grateful for the resources we received.\r\n\r\nThe stress balls, fidgets, and bouncy ball chair have been a huge hit in the classroom. I've used the stress balls and fidgets as rewards for games, and some students still tell me they use theirs frequently when they need something to do with their hands to calm down. These tools have provided an essential outlet for students to manage stress during our math lessons. The adult coloring books and colored pencils have also proven to be great resources for moments in my Freshman support class for students who have completed their work or who just need to take a moment to breathe. The bouncy ball chair has also been so helpful to students who just need to wiggle or who find the standard desks uncomfortable.\r\n\r\nThe snacks you provided have been especially helpful in supporting my students' well-being. In particular, during a recent 2.5-hour lockdown caused by a threat to our school, the snacks were a lifeline. The lockdown occurred just before our snack break, a time when many students rely on the opportunity to grab breakfast. With no ability to leave our classroom, I was able to provide them with the snacks you donated. Not only did this help students who were hungry after hours without lunch, but it also gave them a sense of comfort and stability during a stressful and anxiety-filled situation. The snacks, such as fruit snacks, Jolly Ranchers, Slim Jims, Gardettos, and bottled water, helped calm the students and broke the tension in the room, providing a much-needed distraction in such a tense moment. The color books also gave them something to do to pass the time and divert their attention away from the stressful situation at hand.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for your generous support. You've truly made a difference in the lives of my students, and we are all incredibly grateful for the tools and comfort you've helped provide.","fullyFundedDate":1725385948171,"projectUrl":"project/maximizing-mental-health-in-math-class/8733767/","projectTitle":"Maximizing Mental Health in Math Class","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Cunningham","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9726196"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_88010","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1215,"numTeachers":54,"percentFrplEligible":65,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":74,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":16,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"22.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":67.1,"schoolId":88010,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Thurston High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Thurston High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/springfield-school-district-19/thurston-high-school/88010"}
