My Project
This is my fourth year as a school counselor and third year as a high school counselor. Students enter my office often, overwhelmed by the rigorous academic work load or simply because they need a calm space to debrief or process a conflict with a peer or teacher. During my years as a school counselor, students have often asked why there is no carpet or pillows in my office as they enjoy the sensory benefit of both.
Placing a pillow on a student's lap, back, or shoulders to serve as a targeted stimulation that assists in sensory regulation, promoting a calm and relaxing feeling by providing just enough pressure where it is needed.
Carpet also is used as a sensory aid for students who prefer carpet instead of a pillow. The mental health and social/emotional needs of students are at an all-time high and these needs must be met in order for students to learn the necessary academic and life skills to become college and career ready graduates.
The main goal of this project is to provide a calm, soothing and relaxing space for my students when their school day or life becomes overwhelming. Your help creating a 5-10 minute retreat, or more if needed, will benefit the social/emotional capacity of each student who enters my office. I am a native of Leland and a graduate of North Brunswick High. I have a vested interest in the success of the students of this low-income community. They may not be special to the world but they are special to me and your help will help them realize they are special to other people.
