My students attend an alternative high school after going through an extensive interview/selection process. My students range in age from grade levels 10th through 12th. We are a small school providing a place for students who for various reasons exhibited poor attendance in their home high schools. Reasons usually vary from being bullied, home responsibilities, jobs, needing smaller class sizes, needing more one on one time with staff. My students are respectful, well mannered, and they have elected to be in our school. Most come from low income families, struggling to make ends meet.
Once accepted to our alternative school, students state, "why didn't I come here years ago?" My students are in need of needing a staff who shows that they care and that they are important, they matter.
My colleagues and I do this and it does make a difference. Thank you for reading about my students.
My Project
Our "gym" area is very small, we make the best of a bad situation.
Our PE classes are conducted differently from most PE classes.
Our area is set up with a variety of movement activities on any given day. Basketball has been a popular activity until our hoop broke. My students rotate at will from activity to activity, set up their own games, decide on their own rules. Some elect to simply walk laps around the perimeter in lieu of a group activity. My students LOVE coming to PE class! I am able to work on the fundamentals with my students while they are having FUN. It is all about finding an activity that my students can take with them into adulthood upon graduating from high school, remaining physically active. We enjoyed having Two Ball basketball tournaments, enjoyed by boys and girls. Students come up to our area during their lunch time in order to work on their basketball skills. We're a very small school, no one is NBA bound, we're accepting of each other and just love the game of Basketball. My students come from lower income families, some are on their own. There are no PTA funds or any funds at all for something that brings just pure joy!
