High School Reading: The Gateway to Lifelong Learning
My students need 21 book titles that engage them and speak to their own experience so that they realize the joys and benefits of quiet time spent with a quality book.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Furlong's classroom raised $328

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In my English classroom on the West side of Chicago, my students get to read a book of their own choice one day per week. The time students spend reading has been directly related to how well they do in school, but many adolescents won't read unless a teacher (or someone) hands them the "right" book
The students at my school are 98% Latino.
100% of them receive a free lunch. They are generally polite young men and women, eager to learn but sometimes discouraged by their neighborhood or other socioeconomic factors. My students like to read fiction set in urban environments, nonfiction graphic novels, and autobiographies.
My Project
Independent reading is one of the most important activities we do in my class. My students look forward to the one day a week where they can enter the world of a book they've selected. Many students choose to read these books outside of school as well, and for some, it is the first time they've read a book that speaks to their own feelings and experience.
Having a wider selection of progressive new titles as well as multiple copies of old reliable titles makes my classroom library work for more students.
Once students are exposed to high-quality, engaging books at their own reading levels, they begin to see reading as less of a chore and more of a worthwhile, important activity that they may even choose to do in their free time. I think reading not only helps students do better in school, but it also helps them to have a happier life.
