Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Elementary school classrooms often have a class library, a reading nook, and some flexible seating for little scholars. The engaging environment invites independent reading and fosters a love of stories of all kinds.
By the time they are in high school, students don't often have the opportunity to curl up and get lost in a book.
Many students don't even have books at home, and if they do, they may not see reading as a leisure activity. I hope to create a bit of the Danish concept of hygge, or the creation of comfort and coziness, in my English classroom.
I want to entice students to pursue the stories they are interested in and make reading (and sitting in the reading corner!) a sought after reward for the rigorous work we do in upper level English Language Arts classes. An inviting chair, soft light, and the chance to slow down from a frantically paced day is a respite everyone deserves. Today's readers are tomorrow's leaders!
