This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our district has an annual Battle of the Books competition to promote independent reading. The committee in charge works hard to select engaging and diverse titles for students to read.

At our school we see a real drop off in independent/pleasure reading for students when they begin high school.

Battle of the Books is one way that we keep the passion for reading alive in these students. I have read most of the titles for this years high school contest and I have been blown away by them. They are diverse, deep, thoughtful, emotional, and funny. They are books that will stay with the reader long after they have turned the last page. Students are developing not only their love of reading, but their understanding of different genres and experiences. This helps them learn more about the world and about themselves as readers.

For my students to be successful in competition and be able to meaningfully engage with each book, we need enough copies to go around. Unfortunately, money is tight and we are doing our best with the few copies I have been able to pick up at the used book store.

The books I am requesting will be used with our high school teams. A wonderful bonus of this project is that after the Battle is done, we will be able to use the books for classroom literature circles! Two projects for the price of one!
