About My Students

The student that's submitting this project is a junior at Mountain Ridge High School named Grace Logan, who is a motivated student that's ardent about sustainability. I'm excited about this project due to gardening being a beneficial outlet for kids with special needs, and watching the garden thrive

My student developed this idea after I came to her asking if she would be interested in leading this project idea proposed by our principal, Mrs. Miranda. I had heard Grace talk of in-class projects that her interests pertained to sustainability, so I believed she would be the best student to carry out this work. Thus far, she has shown exemplary leadership skills and determination in completing this project. Her goal is to make this program the most viable for the special needs children, in which an environment is made where they can have visual, hands-on experiences to what they are learning in the classroom and where they have a healthy outlet during the school day. So far, Grace has gotten the garden beds and basic amenities for the garden, but further wishes to continue the garden so there will be a bountiful harvest, along with creating a beautiful area. The long-term goal is to transform the surrounding area into a serene sitting area for teachers, which will boost teacher moral.

My student will learn skills that are instrumental for college and her future career. She is now learning at a young age the importance of being professional when doing a task, and completing said task timely and well. It is vital to learn good leadership skills at a young age, which Grace is doing. One academic skill is she is learning is how to mathematically plan a layout, which she has done with the garden when creating the blueprint for the walkway and placing in the garden to where it will look and work the best. Some social-emotional skills she is learning along with leadership are real-life problem-solving and patience. She has had to encounter real-life problem-solving when our local Home Depot did not have the correct garden bed and she had to call different locations within our county trying to find a solution. She is also learning the skill of patience, since she has to work with the special needs children, with whom she has been exemplary, and she knows all of them by name.

In Their Own Words

The project idea is to create a successful garden for the special needs children here at my high school. Other long term goals are to transform the surrounding areas into a thriving community garden with a peaceful sitting area for teachers, a memorial tree garden, a compost system, and possibly a wetland/aquaponics system. The primary goal I am trying to accomplish is to develop a beneficial learning experience for the special needs children, and also create a beautiful space at my school.

I am making the most out of this leadership opportunity by learning how to be an effective planner and, with my teacher's assistance, learning how to be a responsible leader when doing this project. I am being a leader during this project by organizing every aspect of the garden, and being in charge of exactly which supplies will be used in the garden (gloves, watering can, tiles, etc.). I am also learning how to effectively price out all of my supplies, which is an important aspect of business.

This project is important to me on a personal level because gardening is a hobby of mine, and I feel so lucky to be the leader of the garden here at my school. But also, I believe the most important aspect of this project is gardening being shown to be a valuable outlet for special needs children due to the regiment of the garden tasks. I believe it is important for my school community to further educate students on the importance of healthy eating, and creating a beautiful area on campus.
