High School Designers work Smooth with Silkscreen!
My students need screens, paint and other materials for screen printmaking so they can put their designs into production, learning about both art and commerce.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My main tool to motivate students is to make the real world connections with everything they do.
Students at my school come from economically stressed households.
We are a Title 1 school, with 100% of students qualifying for free lunches. Most of my students are English language learners. My Art classes are mixed populations, with students of all academic levels, and learning differences together in the classroom. I like to think of Art class as the great equalizer. It's a place where all students can work and grow at their pace, and discover abilities they never knew they possessed.
Screen printing offers a unique opportunity for my students to use their designs to connect with the entrepreneurial spirit. Students will design a graphic image for reproduction, using screen printing. They will then market, and sell their product in the community. In addition to honing their design skills, and exploring this printmaking technique, they will learn about the economics of production and marketing, web based commerce, and branding.
My Project
My High School Printmaking class is exploring all different techniques for transferring and reproducing images. The materials that donors, like you, help us purchase, will be the seed of basic supplies to help get their enterprise off the ground. We'd like to purchase a starter set for garment photo screen printing, which includes a Garment Printing Machine, inks, emulsions, and tools to print on fabrics and other surfaces. Students will be able to produce T-shirt of their designs, bag designs, cards, posters, and more. These basic materials will help kick start production. As part of the art/economics lesson from this unit, students will to learn about reinvesting in their business, and developing other products and markets with money they earn through sales of their products.
Students will hone their design skills, explore techniques, and learn about the economics of production, marketing, web based commerce, and branding.
This unit will not only give students the chance to express themselves creatively, but it also lets them turn that creative process into economic reward, and learn to manage those rewards, so they will be prepared for future opportunities.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
