My Students

We have an amazing group of talented, dedicated and diverse students that compete at a high level despite operating on a shoe-string budget. Our students consistently earn high accolades through sheer force of will. Somehow they always rise to the challenge and hold their own against properly funded schools across the country using they ingenuity and ability. With the proper supports our school could become a premier STEM program in our city.

As part of the largest high school in the Philadelphia School District, Our school is home to over 3,500 students with over 50 languages spoken and just as many socioeconomic backgrounds.

School provides a safe space where students' differences are embraced and students can focus on their learning and growth as scientists and as emerging adults.

My Project

Philadelphia is home to some delicious unhealthy food. There is no shortage of pretzel shacks, water ice stands, or cheesesteak shops on the way to school. Sadly, like many other urban areas, healthy options are limited, but convenience stores that fill our students backpacks with trans fats and empty calories are plentiful. To put it succinctly, our student population is at a knowledge deficit when it comes to understanding where our food comes from, and the essentials of a balanced diet. To make matters worse, they are hindered by the scarcity of fresh produce in their communities.

It is our hope that students will be able to help stem the obesity crisis in our community by engineering and maintaining vertical hydroponic gardens in our classrooms and in our homes.

Our goal is to grow crops to be used in our student run cafe with the potential surplus going to to families who are in need.

With the materials such as grown lights, tubing and aquarium pumps provided by this project students will be able to design and build their own vertical hydroponic gardens and grow their own healthy food alternatives.
