Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend an urban dependent charter school in California. Seventy percent of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Sixteen percent of our population is English language learners, and 16.5% of our students receive special education services.
Many students attend our school because they are seeking a smaller high school experience where they won't get lost in the shuffle.
They seek a small, safe, positive culture. Student voice is important and encouraged; students are always a part of the decision-making process. They take great ownership in the school and are often describing it as their second home or family.
My Project
For the past few years, I have incorporated an Independent Reading Project--based entirely on student choice--into my curriculum. It's been a wonderful addition to the classroom, promoting a culture of reading. Students suggest books to each other. Unofficial book clubs meet. Students request books that I bring from my personal home library. Students have even brought me books to read!
My students are requesting new, high-interest books to populate the shelves in the classroom.
They are looking for new titles to read and new genres to discover. These books will inject new life into our classroom library and appeal to a wide range of readers.
