High-Interest Reading Materials for Challenged Teens of Inner City Chicago
My students need high intrest reading in order to engage them in the world outside their neighborhoods. In addition, my low readers need reading material that they can relate to and are age appropriate.

My Students
I serve a population of students from Englewood, South Shore, and Back of the Yards neighborhoods of Chicago. These neighborhoods especially Englewood are some of the most crime-riddled areas of Chicago. These areas are plagued with high crime, unemployment, poverty, and heartache. For many of our student's our school is an oasis and the education they receive is a lifeboat.
Unfortunately, our school can't count on the families of our students for addition materials during this troubled time of budget cuts and financial unrest in Illinois, 99% of our students receive free lunch, in addition, 21% of our students are classified as homeless.
Our students are eager to excel and strive for a better future even though most don't know how to achieve success. We as a proud staff do all was to facilitate their matriculation through our school to become successful additions to society
My Project
Reading will take you places, on an adventure curate your dreams, and nurture your hopes-- but only if you are interested. My students are lacking reading materials that they can easily relate to, and it is extremely hard to get students invested in a story unless there is a readily available hook or relativity factors students won't get into the book, and won't be engaged.
As I tell my students the only way to improve their reading ability is to actually read-- but to a teenager sustained silent reading is akin to having a root canal, when they aren't reading something that interest them.
This project request is for reading material to help build our library, as well as to purchase reading materials to be used within classes, especial my African/Latino American Cultural Studies Class.
There are very few textbooks, or for that matter books in general that cover the material for my African/Latino American Cultural Studies Class. Students yearn to find their place in history, to see why the information they are learning matters. Usually, if a person has an interest in cultural studies or their own history they would their own research or wait until they pick classes in college. I fear that my student can't wait that long, they need to get hooked into learning now so that they acquire the desire to be a life-long learner beyond the university. Many books that I use are college level textbooks that require reading out loud for my students to fully understand, I am in desperate need for books that are not at a college level that my students can engross themselves in, and make a part of themselves.
