My lovely students are spirited and have personality to spare! If I had to generalize my students' actions when they want something: expect someone to just do it for them; or, they've learned-- one way or another-- that to get what you want, you need to be overbearing or take it. They fear and believe that if they don't come off as abrasive they'd be taken advantage of, and overall, they know no other way. They emulate the pop stars that look the most like them. In their eyes, the most successful person in their neighborhood is the drug dealer or gangster. My job is to show them there are more ways to become successful and get what they want than was has been presented in music videos or other forms of media. Our students come from Englewood, Chicago, one of the most violent areas in the city. Generally, our students have little exposure to life outside their neighborhoods. Parental support can't be expected.
