My Students
I teach over sixty-five 2nd through 5th grade gifted students in a suburban Title I school in a high-poverty area. These kids have a thirst for knowledge and love exploring many topics. They represent many nationalities and are all excited to learn and grow in my class. My students need the advanced curriculum I provide, but have the tendency to burn out reading assigned texts as opposed to what they personally choose to read. In this day and age, it is very important for them to be "global citizens" and, to do that, they need to know as much as they can about the big world around them. If they are not able to travel, reading is their ticket to learn about the world and the people that live in it!
My Project
Have you ever found a book series that you LOVED? Did you want to read through the entire series or stop at just one or two books? Just like adult readers, kids get hooked on a series and JUST CAN'T QUIT. My students are gifted learners that fly through their favorite chapter books like they only have a few pages and, most times, beg for the next book in the series. The problem is that I need complete series sets of high-interest books for my kids to read so they can have access to the book sets they so dearly love. Isn't that a wonderful problem to have?
My current class library is in need of a boost.
Ideally, I should have numerous sets of books that the students are crazy about as well as books that aren't your run-of-the-mill stories that everyone is reading. With my students, who are generally high readers, many of the common book sets have already been read. I want to still have those books available because my younger students are excited by being able to jump into those series. Providing them with high-quality series books they haven't necessarily heard of, though, can spur hours and hours of reading practice that my gifted readers might otherwise not receive because they have already finished all "the good ones."
This project aims to fill holes in three very popular book series I already have: Dog Man, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Dork Diaries. It will also purchase full book sets of other various reading series books that I believe my students will love but may not have heard of previously. Last, this project includes the purchase a new shelf that the books will be placed in for students to check out.
