This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school in sunny Arizona. The majority of my students speak English as a second language, and 100% of my students receive free lunch. Many of them have experienced the difficulties and trauma that can come from living in poverty and struggle to focus on school as a result. That said, my students are some of the brightest, most creative kids you could imagine. They LOVE to hear stories, but when they first walk through my door, they often do not connect this love of storytelling with reading. For them, reading is just something assigned by a teacher with no real value in their lives. But as you and I know, reading can be so much more.
Through reading, we can understand the world outside our immediate circumstances and become more empathetic to people unlike ourselves.
Reading can provide an escape. It can entertain, and it can enlighten. Perhaps most importantly, reading opens up countless opportunities for my students.
My Project
As much as teachers hate to admit it, reluctant readers really do judge a book by its cover. Thus, new literature adds new life to our library. Every year we try and gather a few new novels for our library because the simple action of unpacking brand-new books from engaging YA authors reinvigorates students' interest in reading. Students snatch up the new books as soon as possible, and getting them hooked on one book opens the doorway to our entire library.
With your help, we hope to purchase missing or damaged copies from our series, duplicates of our most popular novels, and add new releases to our library that students have been pining for.
Books that are requested with the project come straight out of our Book Wish List, our most frequently checked out titles, and our "Lost Loves" section. Any donation, no matter how small, will help us to reach our goal of procuring new novels such "To All the Boys I Have Loved Before" or replacing our well worn copy of "The Lightning Thief" to engage our most reluctant readers. With your support, we can help students to learn the age old adage, "Don't judge a book by it's cover!"
