My Students

Can you imagine be a student and not having high interest reading materials that educate you about the world? Now imagine you are that student and your are unable to read because you do not speak or read English.

I am a teacher in a public school that is located in an urban district.

My classroom consists of 25 students, 14 of whom are English Language Learners and 5 are on a Individual Education Plans for Special Education services that range from speech and language, occupational therapy, and academic support for learning disabilities. My students all have varying levels of English ranging from completely understanding spoken and written English, to not understanding any English at all. The majority of the students are Spanish speaking and are embracing the opportunity of helping their peers learn how to speak and write in English.

My Project

With this project the entire 5th grade will have access to high interest current events reading. They will be able to learn about current events and have cross grade discussions about the information. With the IPads, my non-English readers will be able to access the same materials on the Scholastic Web Site in Spanish. They will be highly engaged and excited. The vacuum and brooms will ensure that our classrooms are clean and inviting to the students. They will be able to gather on the rug and partner share without worrying about getting their clothes dirty.

If my project is funded my students will have a classroom environment that is engaging and has high quality resources to meet all the needs of students when they are working in groups and/or independently.

My students will be more engaged, more independent and more organized. I will be able to assign and facilitate student learning through exciting activities because I will have the resources necessary. This project will make a huge difference in the education of my students.
