My Students
Did you ever feel like you just couldn't grasp a concept, but wanted to learn? My students feel the same way! They want to learn, but struggle reading. Reading is essential in so many areas of life, including writing, math, social studies and science.
My class is made up of 12 students with special needs, primarily learning disabilities.
These children come from difficult backgrounds, where they rarely practice their skills at home. I have witnessed their frustration with learning and do not want them to grow any more frustrated than they are now. My school is inclusive and we try to have these students integrate into their third, fourth, and fifth grade counterparts whenever possible. However, for academics, they are learning in a smaller setting in order for them to learn on their individual level.
My Project
These Boombox, headphones, and books on tape would be very valuable to my classroom and the students for years to come to benefit from them. The students in the small special education class are behind the general education students in all academic and many social areas. However, with the standards growing harder, these students need more and more places for them to have similar experiences, and be able to compete in this rigorous world. By using headphones, they can complete online vocabulary work in order to widen their background knowledge, without having to read the actual words. They will also be able to speak into the computer, in order to write down their ideas, with speak to text features. They will also listen to texts on their grade level instead of their ability level so they are exposed.
This equipment will do wonders for the classroom, as it will make readers out of students who are reluctant to read at any time of the day.
These students deserve to find their love of reading and books which are interesting for their grade level. Students in my class need to find this love before its too late and they never become readers. I want them to become avid readers!
