Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is ranked as a high poverty school with 99% of our students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. I teach what is called a Self Contained Cross Categorical Academic class of typically about 16-20 students, Kindergarten through third grade. The disabilities in my classroom range in severity. As you can imagine, trying to teach multiple grade levels at once can be challenging, but somehow with our organized chaos, my educational aide and I make it happen. Each and every one of my students are making progress to meet their annual goals. Teaching at my school has been a blessing because I know that, even on the hardest days, I have little ones who come to school and love the consistency and love that they get at school. Not only do I teach my students academics, but I try to push them to do their absolute best and show them that even though they may have a disability, they can do anything if they set their mind to it.
My Project
I love teaching my life cycles unit in the spring! It always amazes me how using pictures and reading books about the life cycle gives the children a way to connect real life with what we are learning about. As a teacher, I always relish in the moments when my children and students become little teachers themselves and create projects and have discussions about the life cycles that we are learning about.
When I teach life cycles, I like to teach the butterfly, frog, chicken, and plant life cycles one after the other.
I encourage the kids to make connections between the different life cycles so that they understand the “big idea” that all living things grow and change. I would like to expand on the basic life cycles which I teach each year and add new books to our life cycle library such as life the cycles of: wolf, horses, jumping spider, snakes and a few seeds to trees. These high interest books will spark student curiosity to learn more about these amazing animals and plants!
Please consider supporting my classroom and my project for new exciting life cycle books.
