Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach third grade, but many students in my class are reading at a first or second-grade level. Many leveled readers have characters that are no longer appropriate for this age group or have very simple and boring plots that do not retain interest or attract students that are are already struggling or disinterested in reading.
I will allow the students in my classroom to check these out from my personal classroom library.
They can practice books within their Zone of Proximal Development, which is the sweet spot for fluency improvement. These books should not be too easy or hard.
The students in my classroom speak up to 3 languages and come from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities. Many of the characters in these books represent different cultures or have diverse animal characters in them. They should be able to relate to the characters and the problems they face with friends or family.
I am excited to offer a larger variety of reading materials!
