My Project

Every single day in my classroom starts with independent reading, and every semester starts with the ever-popular "book tasting" activity in the library, where students are given a smorgasbord of books to investigate and choose from. The problem, however, is that there are only so many books in the library to go around! Our fabulous librarian pulls all of the best, high-interest titles, and they are snatched up right away. If the other English classes schedule a book tasting first, the chances of those high-interest favorites getting grabbed is even higher!

What I want is to have a bunch of the high-interest, high-engagement novels on hand in my own classroom library so I can make sure that every kid gets the book they want the first time.

We're not replacing our lovely school library, just supplementing it! This year, we have been utilizing the amazing Jarred Amato's Read & WRAP routine to make sure that we engage more intentionally and thoughtfully with our independent reads. Feedback from students tells me that our reading time at the start of class with our chill music and relaxing vibe is one of their favorite aspects of class. It's when the kids don't have a book they really want or can't find something that interests them that the reading becomes a chore.

The books on my list (and the shelf to put them on) are all books I have either read myself, heard good things about, or have been explicitly recommended because of their authors or stories. I have supplied quite a few books of my own in the classroom, but I am woefully lacking in sports and more modern YA novels.

I'm hoping that with your help, I can get kids away from their screens and put their nose in a great book!
