Help me give my students high interest books! Wonder is a beautiful story about difference, acceptance and so much more. My students need to read and reflect on these themes with modern children's literature.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Between 95 and 100% of our student body receives free or reduced lunch and our school services several homeless shelters in the downtown area. While our school is located in the rapidly changing neighborhood of Wynwood, Miami which boasts new restaurants and art galleries, most of the students who attend our Title 1 school live a very different reality. Many of our students are also newly arrived from the Caribbean, Central, and South America.
Our students are bright, active and curious despite the many socio-economic challenges that exist in their neighborhood.
My classes include newly arrived children from Central America, students with a range of special needs, as well as students who are in the gifted program. Each child brings their own unique personality, voice, and talents to our classroom community.
My Project
Like most teachers, I have built my classroom library by going through bins of books at Goodwill, picking up books that other teachers don't want anymore, and spending my own money at Scholastic book fairs. These book are fine for my classroom library, but I don't have sets of novels for my class to read. There are some very old classroom sets in the school library, but nothing very current.
My students need to read modern and high interest books!
It is important for all students to have access to high quality, up to date modern children's literature. Please help us buy a class set of the book 'Wonder'.
