Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our classroom is set up in order to encourage a love of reading. On a typical day, you may see students browsing the English or Spanish series bookshelf or an exciting basket of books and taking a favorite book to read on the black rug.
My 4th grade students are bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish!
They attend an urban school in New York City. Most students in the class are classified as English Language Learners and receive free lunch. My students love to read and look forward to independent reading every day. In our bilingual class, some days we read in English and some days we read in Spanish.
My Project
Imagine forty-five minutes each school-day to read whatever your heart desires. This is a time that the kids look forward to each day. They have been working their way through our classroom library and they need new exciting books to read. They especially need engaging Spanish books so that they can continue to develop their literacy in their native language.
Research shows that being literate in your native language increases your overall literacy.
By donating to this project, you are not only helping to improve my students' Spanish reading, but their overall literacy in Spanish and English. My students need high interest Spanish and English books to read during independent reading.
