Help me give my students the motivation to read! These high interest graphic novels and magazines will give my students the intrinsic motivation they need to read in and out of the classroom!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"If a child can't learn the way you teach, then maybe, we should teach the way they learn. -Ignacio Estrada. My students are hands on, multi-sensory learners who are extremely savvy when it comes to technology. They do not often read at home due to lack of resources and interest. It is evident through their daily activities that they love learning and need access to updated materials that will spark their motivation.
Along with the use of online articles, books, and other literacy resources, my students have displayed interest in good ole fashioned books!
My students sustain longer periods of reading when the text provides picture support. My goal is to give them access to multiple means of reading, especially where their interest lies.
My Project
Based on the reading interest survey completed at the beginning of the year, graphic novels are of high interest in my class. The classroom library is a place where students should go to find books they are passionate about. My classroom is a print rich environment and graphic novels and magazines will only make it more meaningful for my students. Students are able to check out books biweekly- depending on their need. They keep our classroom materials and library books in good condition to ensure our materials will last for years to come.
With the new books, my students will have access to age appropriate text with strong picture support.
This will allow them to continue practicing foundational skills on high leveled text. Increased motivation has shown to increase reading stamina. With these books, my students will grow as readers!
