My students come from all cultures and backgrounds. Being at a Title I school, funding is low and a lot of the students here are unable to afford basic school supplies. As a teacher, I want my students to have the necessary materials they need in order to complete higher level thinking activities and projects. The more help we get, the more we can do!
My students love to use technology, they want engaging and hands on activities, they want to be able to use more than just their pencil and paper.
We are preparing them for the future work force, and so the more styles of learning and activities that they can be exposed to, the better!
My Project
Students here at Parkview need resources, specifically BOOKS. Many of my 6th graders are ready to read, but struggle to find books that are interesting to them and relevant for the age they are living in. This leads to them becoming frustrated and not wanting to pick up any books at all.
Through this project, students will be introduced to new texts, and books that are suspenseful, insightful, and relevant to who they are.
My goal is to incorporate mini book clubs in my class where students can choose a variety of these texts to read and enjoy-and that's it. Just reading for the sake of reading and enjoyment. The only way for them to improve their reading skills is for them to do just that: read. Through this project, they will have the opportunity to try out multiple new books and read them with their peers.
I also plan to read a novel whole class-"The Westing Game" by Ellen Raskin, which is an interesting, suspenseful, and engaging book full of character development, themes, and plot twists. My students will get these resources through YOUR donations!
Plus, my students HAND PICKED titles such as "The Crossover", "The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die", and "The Selection" as books they were most hoping to get to read!
