My Students
My students are active third graders from a rural community in southern Michigan. Our school is a small building with grades 3-5, 3-4 classrooms per grade level. We are a Title I school with over 60% of our students receiving free/reduced breakfast and lunches.
Overall, my students are active learners and have a thirst for new knowledge.
They love learning, especially math, science, and social studies! When interested in the reading material, they beg for more time to read. However, keeping their interest all year long is difficult, which is why high interest reading material is so crucial.
My students love to be challenged academically and are social bugs. They are active outside of school with multiple extra-curricular activities.
My Project
My classroom library is full of many different types of books from fiction picture books, poetry books, lots of favorite chapter book series, and many nonfiction books on a variety of interesting topics. But every year I encounter the "highly selective" reader! Those readers struggle to find books that interest them and I want to fix that by offfering them more choices.
My classroom is lacking is one specific type of book: GRAPHIC NOVELS.
I know that by giving my "highly selective" readers books with more graphics, I will get them reading more. I am asking for books from the following series: Scholastic True and False, Science Comics, Graphic History, Graphic Science: Max Axiom, Sports Illustrated Graphics, and An Interactive Adventure.
